Pregnancy #1

I got pregnant quickly. We’re lucky. In the beginning I was bloated and uncomfortable…actually, let’s be honest, I was bloated and uncomfortable the whole pregnancy but it surprised me how quickly I was uncomfortable in the pants that used to fit in just fine. By the time I had positive pregnancy tests, I was uncomfortable. Turns out I had a huge ovarian cyst (the ultrasound picture on this post is of the cyst and not the baby). I felt incredibly hungry and nauseous at the same time. I threw up now and again, like the kind of throwing up you do after a perfectly timed coughing fit. It was lovely. If you are newly pregnant and feeling this way these are my recommendations.

To clarify, I consider myself frugal. I only spend money on things that I think will make a difference. So below are what I actually used and found helpful. If it gives you an idea, I did not invest in a pregnancy pillow until my second pregnancy and bought ginger chews from a local Asian grocer since they were much cheaper than anywhere else…

#1 Pregnancy Underwear

Anyway, the first pregnancy product I invested in was pregnancy underwear (after prenatal vitamins). I felt guilty spending >$15 dollars on these, but once I got them and started wearing them I didn’t feel guilty anymore….

These fit my body, but there are boy short varieties too…. I found the 100% cotton versions the best for my undercarriage.

#2 Compression Socks

I work in medicine….on my feet for long periods. Compression socks made sense. I felt like I could get a load of laundry done weekly and my feet aren’t the stinkiest so 6 pairs was enough. These worked well. And plenty of color/pattern options (a little personality peaking out from under bland scrub pants).

#3 Protein Powder

I’m diabetic. Protein in breakfast helped my blood sugar stabilize, especially in the 1st and 3rd trimesters. After having some issues with blood sugars spikes and falls, I tried this protein powder out (I found making a smoothie in the morning was the easiest way to make sure I was getting something in my stomach before going to the hospital) and really enjoyed it. I found my morning sickness was the worst in the morning but this sat just fine. I like the chocolate mocha flavor the best, but there are others. This was a staple of my pregnancy life.
